IP Hot Topic: Perioperative Strategies

FHA Infection Prevention Hot Topic: Perioperative Strategies to Prevent Surgical Site Infections
Tuesday, June 25, 2024
2:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m. ET

Overview

In Florida, progress has been made in addressing surgical site infections (SSI), yet it remains one of the most challenging outcomes to address in the hospital setting. SSIs in general are some of the most common HAIs reported and can be disproportionately higher among patients that have had colon surgery or abdominal hysterectomy. Patients who acquire SSI are known to have significant patient complications with adverse clinical outcomes. While advances have been made in infection control practices including improved operating room ventilation, sterilization methods, barriers, surgical technique and availability of antimicrobial prophylaxis, SSIs remain a substantial cause of morbidity, prolonged hospitalization and death.

Please join FHA for this important educational program led by nationally recognized infection prevention expert, Linda Greene, RN, MPS, CIC, FAPIC.   She will be sharing information and infection prevention practices and strategies that can be used perioperatively to reduce the risk of SSIs.

This virtual event is part of the FHA Infection Prevention webinar series that provides hospital infection preventionists and team members with the latest information, evidence-based practice, and resources for eliminating hospital-acquired infections (HAI).

Objectives:

  1. Understand the role of the peri-operative team in reducing the risk of SSI.
  2. Discuss strategies on the selected approach to implementation of change in process and/or practice and how effectiveness was measured.
  3. Know the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and patient/family engagement to address the complex variables of the patient population, processes, organizational factors and  surgical practice.
