Multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs) are continuing to develop and spread in healthcare settings throughout the United States. MDRO transmission is most frequently documented in acute care facilities, however, all healthcare settings are affected by the emergence and transmission of antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms. The prevention and control of MDROs is a national priority that requires all healthcare facilities and agencies to collaborate in prevention and control initiatives. The following discussion is an update on MDRO prevention and control initiatives at a national, state, and organizational level.

Objectives:
1. Outline MDRO as a global public health threat.
2. Describe the most current strategies to prevent MDRO transmission in Florida.
3. Discuss current MDRO prevention and containment strategies in health care organizations.
4. Describe public health resources to assist in prevention and mitigation of MDRO transmission.
