Florida's Hospitals Generate Over 901,600 Jobs Statewide

Tallahassee, FL - A new University of Florida economic impact study shows Florida's hospitals are responsible for creating over 901,600 full and part-time jobs and generating $128.37 billion in total economic contributions statewide. The report is an update to the 2013 University of Florida study and based on 2015 data from the Agency for Health Care Administration and the Florida Hospital Uniform Reporting System.

"The data clearly demonstrate that Florida's hospitals are creating jobs and contributing to Florida's economic growth. Since 2013, the number of full-time equivalent hospital employees has increased by 6.87 percent," said the report's primary author, Alan Hodges, PhD.

In addition to the direct impacts to the state economy, hospitals also make substantial impacts indirectly through industry supply chains and employee household spending in their communities. Economic contributions by hospitals in 2015 represented 8.23 percent of Florida's $890.78 billion Gross Domestic Product.

"Hospitals are the largest employers in many communities across Florida," said Bruce Rueben, FHA president. "Our member hospitals constantly reinvest in their communities and train new generations of health care providers."

The report further breaks down the economic impact to regional and county levels, with regional hospital employment contributions as follows:

Miami/Ft. Lauderdale 294,613 jobs
Orlando 215,321 jobs
Tampa/St. Pete 153,287 jobs
Sarasota/Bradenton 76,206 jobs
Jacksonville 71,676 jobs
Gainesville 34,731 jobs
Pensacola 28,070 jobs
Tallahassee 17,399 jobs
Panama City 10,370 jobs

The top 12 Florida counties with the largest overall hospital employment contributions were as follows: Miami-Dade, Hillsborough, Orange, Broward, Duval, Palm Beach, Pinellas, Alachua, Lee, Brevard, Volusia, and Polk. Fifteen other counties have employment contributions of at least 10,000 jobs, and 24 other counties had at least 1,000 jobs.
