Florida Hospital Association Statement on COVID-19 Relief Funding

Statement on behalf of Mary Mayhew, Florida Hospital Association President and CEO

"On behalf of Florida's more than 300 hospitals and the nurses, physicians and other health care professionals who are caring for our patients, we are grateful for the U.S. Congress' passage of the COVID-19 relief package and government funding bill.

The bill includes essential provisions that will provide immediate financial relief for all our hospitals, including elimination of cuts to Medicaid disproportionate share hospital payments for three years and continued suspension of the Medicare sequester for an additional three months.

Florida's hospitals have sustained financial losses conservatively estimated at more than $3 billion since the beginning of the pandemic. These losses cannot be eliminated overnight, and hospitals will need sustained investment to maintain their essential public health and direct care roles.

As hospitals add vaccine distribution and administration to their frontline duties, the bill's nearly $70 billion in funding to support the purchase and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines will help hospitals efficiently vaccinate priority populations in accordance with all recommended guidelines.

This relief legislation is much needed, and we thank the Congressional leadership and members of the Florida delegation who heard our needs and concerns. We will continue to articulate hospitals' needs and challenges as well as the many ways they have innovated and collaborated during this extraordinary public health emergency to ensure all Floridians get the care they need."
