Tallahassee, FL - As part of its continued commitment to hospital price and quality transparency, the Florida Hospital Association (FHA) today unveiled a new section of its "Mission to Care" website, which features publicly available information on hospital prices and quality in an easy-to-use, searchable format. Average prices and quality ratings are displayed by hospital for the 50 most common medical conditions or procedures. The website includes several resources to help patients before, during and after their hospital stay.
Users can view the average charge (the price for each service or procedure after the hospital has allocated all costs on a pro rata basis to each of those services and procedures), average payment (amount paid to the hospital by insurance companies) and the number of patients treated at the hospital in 2014 for a particular medical condition or procedure. The "Mission to Care" website also provides users with context for the cost data and emphasizes that patients should contact their hospitals, physicians and health plans for accurate out-of-pocket estimates.
When making health care decisions, it is important to look at quality and patient safety measures. The website's quality section features ratings on several patient safety issues such as hospital acquired infections and readmissions.
Additionally, the site includes 40 health care quality measures, such as recommended care, results of care, practice patterns and patient experience.
"Florida hospitals are committed to providing patients with helpful information about the cost and quality of their care," said FHA President Bruce Rueben. "The Mission to Care website is a public resource to help patients and their families make better informed health care decisions. This represents a new step forward as our state works toward a more comprehensive data set that fully captures where we invest our health care dollars."
To create the hospital price and quality website, FHA compiled publicly available data from four key sources, including:
- Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) Discharge Data
- Florida Hospital Uniform Reporting System (FHURS)
- Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare Ratings
- Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Patient Experience Ratings
