Don’t Be Resistant! Reducing MRSA and Other Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms

Coaching Call Recap and Key Takeaways

On May 8, 2018, the FHA Mission to Care HIIN Chasing Zero Infections Webinar focused on reducing Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms (MDROs). This interactive coaching call facilitated by national infection prevention expert Linda R. Greene, RN, MPS, CIC, FAPIC, provided participants the opportunity to discuss challenges and strategies to prevent transmission of MRSA and other MDROs. View the recording and slide presentation.

Key takeaways from the discussion include:

  • Understand the history and epidemiology of resistant organisms: MRSA, Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE) and Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE)
  • Implement both horizontal strategies (prevention techniques used to address all organisms) and vertical strategies (prevention techniques that target specific organisms) for prevention of MDROs
    • Horizontal strategies: hand hygiene, standard precautions, universal decolonization, antimicrobial stewardship, environmental cleaning and disinfection
    • Vertical strategies: active surveillance, contact precautions and decolonization of colonized or infected patients
  • Adopt current strategies to reduce the risk of transmission for MRSA (contact precautions, patient and family education, proper cleaning and disinfection of equipment and targeted decolonization)
  • Hand hygiene remains a best practice for reducing the risk of MDRO transmission - So don't forget to SOAP UP!
