The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced the restriction of power strips in patient care areas, per the National Fire Protection Association's (NPFA) requirements. Power strips, also known as relocatable power taps, are prohibited from operating rooms, patient rooms, areas for recovery, exams and diagnostic procedures.
The American Hospital Association and American Society for Healthcare Engineering are working with CMS and NPFA to clarify the requirements. Organizations are encouraged to consult with facility and engineering directors for hospital-specific information. FHA staff will communicate information on this issue as it becomes available.
